Mego Knockoff HQ: Shindana Slade

slade

Slade may be one of my favourite Mego Like toys of all time. A low budget repurposing of Shaft from toy maker Shindana (a swahili word meaning “To Compete”) focused on making toys for minority youth in America, who were being largely underserved at the time by the majors. Slade is a Big Jim scaled man of action who doesn’t carry a gun and explains that Slade is a secret agent thanks to his growing up in the neighbourhood, serving in the army and going to college.

Oh and he’s a badass looking figure to boot. More on Slade and Shindana over at PlaidStallions.

Foreign: Popy Ken Owashi (AKA Mark from Battle of the Planets)

Popy copied Mego figures so well I find they improved upon the formula, they made a handful of characters sadly this guy is the only member of G-Force that was produced in this format.

Megolike is gone, burned to the ground thanks to Melodrama.

Cancelled Lines: Flattworld Zorro

fw_zorro

Flatt World was one of the first companies to jump into the “ReMego” fold but it would utilize a hyper realistic format and produce 8″ lovingly detailed figures. Their first release of Bela Lugosi had a retail of $59.95 and while a critical hit,  the company struggled with retail distribution.

Zorro, based on the then hot Anthony Banderas film were just one of the many cool licenses in the pipeline. In the days of people spending car payments on Hot Toy figures and kickstarter campaigns, this seems like a no brainer but sadly, 1999 was a different world and FW’s legacy began and ended with Dracula.

Websites: Gabriel Lone Ranger Archive

Plaidstallions hosts the web’s most comprehensive gallery of Gabriel Lone Ranger toys. It’s actually a bit bittersweet seeing as this line needs to be celebrated more, there should be dozens of websites talking about it.

Figures, outfits, playsets, foreign variants, it’s all here at the Gabriel Lone Ranger Archive. Always actively seeking submissions of items they don’t have, spread the love!

Cancelled Lines: Playing Mantis Action Jackson Wave 3

display

I swear that I was the only guy who liked this line when it was available and I still stand by how fun it was. The Playing Mantis reboot of Action Jackson proposed third wave of figures would have included an Animal Wrangler (complete with rubber snakes), a parachutist (that worked) and a WW2 soldier and FRIGGING JEEP!

Sadly, it was all for naught, PM closed it’s doors not long after. The wonderful woman who ran their message boards gave me the AJ catalog for all of this but it’s lost to bottomless pit that is my filing cabinet….

Weep with me!
