Toy-Ventures Magazine Issue 10 brings you Pulsar the movie!

Toy-Ventures Magazine Issue 10

Toy-Ventures Magazine Issue 10

Issue 10 starts with a stunning piece of art by Peter Carsillo, who told me he’d do a Pulsar cover ages ago should the need arise. So when I reached out, we began to explore concepts. When the idea of a movie poster came up, I mentioned “Infra-Man” probably because I was staring at it while messaging him.

Just from that, Peter crafted a Basil Gogos-inspired movie poster for a Pulsar movie that, sadly I cannot watch. I also want to point out that I will get that movie made or die trying.

My favourite thing about this is the “Pulsar Universe” Peter brought to life here. A bevy of beauties, a fleet of vehicles but also adding the ironic twist that they all are repurposed from other Mattel toylines. That is…Chef’s Kiss toy satire, and I love it. There are a couple of other toy easter eggs in there that I will leave for you to find them all.

SPECIAL LIMITED-TIME OFFER-

If you order Toy-Ventures magazine issue 10 through our shop, you will get a free “Amigos Del Terror” patch while supplies last.

Mego Planet of the Apes Jail - Toy-Ventures magazine

Mego Planet of the Apes Jail – Toy-Ventures magazine

Working on issue 10 of Toy-Ventures Magazine, and for no good reason, I thought it might be fun to try and recreate the artwork of the beautiful accessories boxes. I am something of an impulsive creature.

My first attempt is the Planet of the Apes Jail, a silly toy with an awesome box. I had a few limitations with this one, like the Jail on the box differs from the toy. Also, you can get only so much dynamic action from a type 1 Mego figure, but I got close enough to share.

Look for Issue 10 of Toy-Ventures at the end of May; it will continue our Mego apes coverage and a mind-blowing amount of toy goodness.

Please help us keep print toy collector magazines alive by sharing this or using our hashtag #toyventures if you own some issues or see them in the wild.
We could use all the help we can get.

Mall of Justice Update plus a call to action

Mall of Justice Cover.

Mall of Justice Book Cover Brian Heiler Mall of Justice Book Cover

It’s been a while since I posted any updates, so here we go.

As I begin laying out my next book, “Mall of Justice,” and hope for a 2023 release, I once again plead with you for submissions. I want to share your photos and stories if you met He-Man at Toys R Us or Captain America at a Car wash. It doesn’t matter if “Chewbacca” was a guy wearing loafers in a gorilla mask; that’s a bonus!

Store mascots are cool, too; the weirder, the better.

Send your stories and photos to toyventuresmag@gmail.com, and I’ll do my best to include them in the publication.

Mall of Justice is super (pun intended) personal for me, as an encounter with the Marvel heroes in a Woolco was highly impactful on my young brain.

I’ve been carefully curating many of these photos over the years, but I could use more. Hoping to launch the book this fall.

If you have photos before Cosplay showed them how it’s done, please get in touch with me.

Other ways to help, share this page or share the FB page on Social Media, let friends know. I could really use a leg up.

About Mall of Justice-

“Mall of Justice” celebrates the sometimes clunky and silly costumed character appearances that doted our suburban landscape in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Featuring a series of submitted photos and memories from the kids who experienced them. Before Cosplay, we had Mall Appearances.

Written by Brian Heiler, author of “Rack Toys: Cheap Crazed Playthings” and “Knock-Offs: Totally Unauthorized Action Figures” this new publication will be a photo review of wonky Darth Vaders, Batman with mustaches and truly disturbing He-Men.

Great news from the factory floor as White Elephant Toyz shared some new images of the “Fresh from the mould” pieces for the upcoming Tura Satana action figure.

The official  action figure is almost here, sign up for our mailing list to get an exclusive art print and early notice when the figure is ready, so you can, as Varla would say, “Go get her!”

The Tura Satana action figure is being co-produced by White Elephant Toyz and PlaidStallions under license from Tura Satana Inc. and will be available in late 2022. This 8″ retro cloth figure will be a limited edition and come in an exclusive solid box with art by Joseph Michael Linsner.

Mego Knock Off Headquarters– The leading group discussing 70s Dime store knock-offs and bootleg action figures, we talk vintage toys and not others. We know the difference between Astro Apes and Action Apeman.  It’s a fun group where we talk about Lincoln Monsters, AHI, Mighty Gary, Tomland, Bogi, Demo Man, Mortoys, and other generic greats.

Presenting the Lincoln Monsters Collectible Pins

Presenting the Lincoln International Monsters Collectible Pins by Toy-Ventures Collectibles.

The Lincoln International Monsters are one of my favourite childhood memories, and I always want to find ways to work with them. I designed each pin based on the original packaging art I’m utterly infatuated with.

The idea came because I wanted to make a set of Lincoln Monster pins for myself, and it spiralled from there. The factory I used for this was quite excellent.  I’m elated with their quality and look. Sometimes you make things for yourself, but you also want to share. You can get the Lincoln Monsters individually or as a unique carded set while supplies last.

It was also really fun laying out that card. I wanted to make it like a gumball machine card as much as possible, but my Rack Toy biases ultimately won.

The Lincoln Monsters pins are available at our store or on eBay.

I’ve also made a few other collectible pins based on knockoffs and characters from this website. Look for a few more designs coming very soon.

70s Superhero toys in Japanese Starlog – Mego, Remco, AHI and More!

I recently stumbled across this fantastic issue of Japanese Starlog, which was a lot like the US version, except its graphic design was way more exciting.
This particular issue has a feature on all the imported Superhero toys from the US you can buy. So the best way to describe it is like a Heroes World catalogue but from the future.

This page makes me weak in the knees and it’s not just the gem-mint carded Mego Riddler on display. Those Mego Comic Action Heroes’ deluxe sets with the Batmobile and Spider-Car are big favourites of mine. I also don’t have that AHI parachuting Superman.

Our first guests are the amazing Joe and Gav from Leicester Vintage Toy Shop and hosts of Toy Shop on Tour now in its second season on YouTube.

We talk about the show, vintage toy trends, bootleg toys, how Palitoy would bury toys and our mutual admiration for toys that are “a bit naff.”
